Elsa Drevyn (SE)

Statement

I have had the honor of being the FPTA Secretary for the past two years. During this time, I have seen how hard this association works for its members and for the profession. This time has been filled with challenges and accomplishments as a profession and on an individual basis for all of us. I have watched as the FPTA works relentlessly to advance the profession forward and help its members when presented with hardships, such as natural disasters. Read more in campaign packet.

Bio

Dr. Drevyn has been a Physical Therapist for 31 years. She has worked in a variety of settings during those years including acute care, outpatient, home health, SNF, and the school system before concentrating in pediatrics. She joined the faculty at the University of Miami in 2006 where she is a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Director of Clinical Education. She was the chair for the Florida Consortium of Clinical Educators and the Vice Chair prior to that. Read more in campaign packet.

CariAnn German (EC)

Statement

Through my involvement in the FPTA, I have seen the true value of our professional association and it’s continuous advocacy on my behalf. I would like to play a larger role and have greater influence in directing the organization’s efforts by serving as Secretary on the Board of Directors. I have been prepared for this position during my 2 years of experience as the FPTA EPSIG Chair. Read more in campaign packet.

Bio

Dr. CariAnn German, PT, DPT graduated from the University of Florida in 2013. She spent the first 5 years of her practice at Advent Health Orlando where she treated the Neuro population, trained students as an FPTA Certified Clinical instructor, and served as a Lab Assistant in Adventist University’s DPT Neuro courses. She has been an APTA/FPTA member since 2012, served as the FPTA Early Professional Special Interest Group (EPSIG) Chair 2016-2018, and attended LAMP 101 and 201 Leadership Training program in 2017-2018. Read more in campaign packet.

Statement

I have been honored to serve as your FPTA treasurer for the last 2 years. I have learned a lot about the working dynamics of the board and the processes. Bio

Ginger Snead is the owner and primary therapist in a small private practice in Melbourne Beach.  Ginger, however, has had the opportunity to work in many different clinical settings in her 30+ years as a therapist including acute and subacute care, SNF, and home health. While her love and specialty are in Geriatrics, she has also worked a Revenue Integrity Auditor for the Shriners Hospital for Children. Read more in campaign packet.

Juan Jose Villeda (WC)

Statement

Over the past several years it has been an honor to serve as an advocate and ambassador of our profession at the state and federal level. Understandably this requires a tremendous amount relationship building and financial support to help bring our message to patients in the state and to our legislators. Juan Jose Villeda, PT, DPT, OCS graduated from the University of South Florida with a Master of Science in Physical Therapy in 2003. Statement

Why am I qualified?
I am task-driven and goal-oriented. Over my tenure, I helped develop Chief Rep orientation materials (including easily digestible Robert’s Rules videos) and reinforce year-round governance. I worked closely with the Reference Committee to overhaul the process of motion development to more closely mirror that of the APTA House. Read more in campaign packet.

Bio

Meryl Alappattu, PT, DPT, PhD graduated a Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of Florida (UF) in 2008. After graduation, she completed a year-long clinical residency at University of Florida Health in Cancer Rehab and has continued her clinical work specializing in rehabilitation for patients with cancer and pelvic health issues. Dr. Alappattu completed her PhD in Rehabilitation Science at the UF in 2014, studying mechanisms of pelvic pain in women and is currently a Research Assistant Professor in the UF Dept. of Physical Therapy. Read more in campaign packet.

Mark Bishop PT, PhD, FAPTA is Associate Professor and Director of Physical Therapy Education in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Florida. He has more than 30 years of clinical, teaching and research experience predominantly in the area of musculoskeletal dysfunction with a recent focus on development and recovery from pain conditions. Read more in campaign packet.

I would be privileged for the opportunity to serve the Association as the Vice Speaker of the Assembly. My background within the Association has been diverse. I have worked collaboratively with the Board of Directors, Assembly Officers and Representatives in my previous role as Secretary. Jodi is the DPT Program Chair at AdventHealth University. She teaches in the area of neuroscience and neurorehabilitation and practices part time in a pro bono clinic specializing in neurologic rehabilitation. Nationally she has served the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties as a Content Expert and Chair of the Membership and Public Relations Committee for the Neurology Section. Statement

I have been honored to serve on the Florida delegation as Chief Delegate to the APTA House of Delegates and chapter delegate for the last 17 years, and believe that my experience on the delegation in combination with my experience in various leadership positions with the FPTA and APTA has allowed me to serve effectively as the Chief Delegate. These experiences, in combination with my experiences as a clinician and a teacher, allow me to be acutely aware of the issues within the profession, especially in regards to reimbursement, scope of practice, and education. Read more in campaign packet.

Arie J. van Duijn is a Professor of Physical Therapy at the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Florida Gulf Coast University. His current area of practice/teaching includes orthopedic physical therapy with a special interest in manual therapy of the spine and the extremities, Ultrasound Imaging, and EBP. He has served as SW District Chair and Regional Director, served on the FPTA Board of Directors from 2004-2008, and served as Chair of the FPTA Conference Committee from 2006-2009 and committee member until 2019. Rick Douglass (SW)

Statement

I have been a member of the APTA since graduating from Florida A&M in 1991. Throughout that time, I have been an active, contributing member and have been proud to serve alongside the so many great people of the FPTA and APTA. In 2010, I was one of the founders of Florida Physical Therapists in Private Practice. I served on the board of FLPTPP for 5 years and was instrumental as it transitioned into an FPTA Special Interest Group in 2015. Read more in campaign packet.

Bio

The reward of this profession, in my opinion, is in the learning and in the passing on of the fruits of that learning to my patients and colleagues. To that end I have spent the 29 years of my career in a continued state of learning, teaching and sharing and I find that very rewarding. Along the way I have earned certification as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, and Fellowship in the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. Read more in campaign packet.

Kevin Lulofs-MacPherson (NO) 

Statement

The role of Director of Practice is 2-fold; 1) disseminate practice-related information and guide members in all aspects of practice and 2) be a voice for our members, as liaison to the SIGs, regarding negative and positive impacts on practice from actions taken by our guiding bodies (APTA/FPTA/Florida Board of Physical Therapy) and the third-parties that can influence practice (State representatives/third-party payer executive/regulatory bodies). Read more in campaign packet.

Bio

Kevin is a full-time faculty member at the University of Florida where he teaches in the orthopedic curriculum. He recently closed his private practice in hopes of improving his ability to mentor future clinicians more fully. Paula Shulthiess earned her DPT from University of Central Florida. She is employed in an outpatient facility at Lee Health and conducting research on adapted tango for people with Parkinson’s disease. Kathy Swanick (SW)

Statement

I am honored to have served the FPTA for the past 2 years in the role of Director of Advocacy: I am seeking your support re-election as your Director of Advocacy. During my first term I have worked with our staff and lobby team to move Practice act Legislation that will soon go into law that provides updated definitions for Physical Therapist Practice and provides Physical Therapists the ability to perform dry needling. Kathy Swanick received her BS in Physical Therapy from Russell Sage College and her Masters in Community Health and DPT from the Sage Graduate School in Troy NY: After moving to Fort Myers to take a faculty position at FGCU she became engaged in the FPTA having served as district officer, Assembly Representative for the SW District, Regional Director, Chapter Secretary and 2 terms as Chapter president. She currently serves as Director of Advocacy, and was appointed to serve on the APTA Public Policy and Advocacy Committee. She has also served as a Delegate for Florida Chapter since 2007. Brenda Dorman is a Lead Therapist at Orlando Health Rehabilitation Institute Outpatient Program; she’s been a PTA for 19 years. Brenda is passionate about the profession; her goal is to take that passion to help shape and support the profession. Brenda Dorman is a Lead Therapist at Orlando Health Rehabilitation Institute Outpatient Program, part of Orlando Regional Level I Trauma Hospital. She’s been a Physical Therapist Assistant for 19 years, with the majority of her time in the outpatient setting. She is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist and was a part of the winning team for the PT/PTA Team Award in 2015 from the FPTA and from the APTA in 2016. Read more in campaign packet.

Laura Ugurlu (EC)

Statement

I have been privileged to serve on the district level the past three years and would be honored to become involved at the state level. Last year was an exciting time to be a PTA celebrating our 50th anniversary. I was involved in organizing events to celebrate this as well as being a contributing writer to our monthly PTA newsletter since formation. Laura Ugurlu is a graduate of Seminole State College Physical Therapist Assistant Program and has been a member of the FPTA since 2015. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree from University of Central Florida double majoring in Advertising/Public Relations and Psychology. Statement 

Being a member of the Nominating Committee is near and dear to my heart. Bio 

Dr. Jennifer Fogel graduated with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2009 from the University of Florida. Dr. Fogel has been practicing as a Physical Therapist at UF Health Rehab Hospital (formally Shands Rehab Hospital) in Gainesville, Florida since 2009. She specializes in the neurologic population in the inpatient rehab setting as the primary physical therapist on the Brain Injury team as well as a senior clinician for the department which serves as a mentor to staff and student clinical instructor. Read more in campaign packet.

Richard Romeis (SW) 

Statement

My goal is to serve at the local and state level in any capacity that I am best suited for to further advance our profession. My passion begins with educating students and mentoring the next generation of Physical Therapists. This is why I was happy to help found the Early Professional Special Interest Group. Dr. Romeis, PT, DPT graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University in 2014. Following graduation, he completed a manual therapy certification through the Florida Institute of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy in 2015 to further his skills working outpatient orthopedics in Southwest Florida.
