The goal of our Professional Development piece is to encourage professional development by providing opportunities for professional association involvement, continuing education, and community service. We hope to do this through personal relationships fostered through this group and the information provided below.

Journal Club

Want to catch up on some of the latest and more relevant research articles? Click here to access our Journal Club forum, where other early professional Physical Therapists post regular reviews of articles that have been effective in their practice. The articles have already been broken down using a standard template to make it easy to join in on the discussion.

Clinical Guidance

If you are having trouble with a particularly complex patient case or just wondering what is the best outcome measure to use to track a particular patient populations progress this is the place to reach out to your fellow early professionals. Click here to access our Clinical Guidance forum where other early professional Physical Therapists post cases, questions, and patient puzzles to get input from their peers. This forum is monitored regularly by FPTA EPSIG Officers so that you can receive a timely response. We only ask that you be extremely mindful of maintaining patient confidentiality and avoiding using specific identifiers for your co-workers or facility.

Reference Websites

We have found the following websites to be helpful in our early years of practice. Please do not consider this an exhaustive list nor are these recommendations by the FPTA, but know it is a great place to get started if you are looking for some quick ways to find quality information and clinical help.

PTNow is provided through the APTA and allows free access to research engines such as ProQuest, PubMed, and others. Some clinicians don't know that we have access to this excellent resource, and it is a great place for new professionals to keep up with the latest research.

Hooked on Evidence

This site provides access to over 8,000 articles dealing with the latest evidence-based research articles related to physical therapy interventions. It is easily searchable using key words for the condition and interventions in which you are interested.

A first step toward progressing clinical skill and advancing efficiency/proficiency with continuing education through the Florida Institute of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy (FIOMPT). Take a weekend course or the whole certification program and become a Certified Manual Physical Therapist (CMPT).

Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy

Who can forget the rigors of working through this site to obtain our Florida licensure and sign up for the NPTE? This site remains a valid tool, especially for those transferring to Florida from out of state and those seeking licensure in another state.

This website is specifically for designing HEPs for your patients. It offers a free or premium version where you can browse hundreds of exercises by equipment, body region, or specialty area.

It breaks down each test and measure into easy to scan grids that include all the information on how to perform, score, and interpret your results. It also includes the psychometric qualities and usually there is a link to access the forms when available.

PT Podcast Network

On this site hour-long podcasts are posted almost monthly by Erik Meira, PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS in Portland, Oregon. He utilizes the podcasts to interview other well-respected Physical Therapist providing insight into how they got to where they are now and for discussing other topics that are important to the PT profession today.
