Keynote Presentation - Time for Action: Physical Therapists' Role in the Opioid Epidemic

Keynote Speaker

Eric Chaconas, PT, DPT, PhD, FAAOMPT

The United States is in the midst of a national opioid epidemic. Death rates caused by prescribed opioids have quadrupled over the past 15 years. Currently, drug overdose is the leading cause of death for those under age 50. Floridians make up a disproportionate number of these deaths prompting the State Government to create strict regulations on opioid prescriptions beginning in 2018. The physical therapy profession is in a key position to provide solutions to the opioid crisis and the time for action is now. This presentation will provide the framework for clinical practice, advocacy and public awareness related to the physical therapy profession as one solution to the opioid epidemic.
