Florida Board of Physical Therapy Approves Rule Authorizing Dry Needling

Dry Needling Authorization in Process, don't try and practice until final approval is announced! – Any licensee who practices dry needling prior to the final authorization will face disciplinary action!

For over five years, the FPTA has pursued the adoption of a rule authorizing physical therapists to practice Dry Needling. We are happy to report that the Board of Physical Therapy voted on February 8, 2018, to adopt a rule that outlines the requirements for practicing Dry Needling.

Please note that the Board’s action is not final authorization for physical therapists to begin to utilize dry needling. In fact, the rule must now be published for comment, reviewed under Florida’s Joint Administrative Procedures process, potentially revised, and ultimately adopted. Additionally, legal challenges may also be filed against the rule to prohibit it from becoming effective.

Members should not, under any circumstances, rely on the draft rule to begin Dry Needling. The FPTA will update the membership as the rule moves through the rigors of the Florida’s administrative process and legal challenges.

In adopting the rule, the board declared Dry Needling to be within the scope of practice of physical therapist education and no specific number of additional training hours is required. However, the board does require that physical therapists who choose to practice Dry Needling must demonstrate competencies as outlined within the rule or face disciplinary action.

Please do pay close attention to alerts from the FPTA updating the approval of the rule effecting the use of Dry Needling. This is a strong victory and members should be proud of their professional association!
